Another year is here and that means new year's resolutions!! Well it is always a good practice to look back and see what has worked and what has not worked for you, and then make choices on how you want your future to look. However the way most of us set resolutions immediately sets us up to fail.
So let's look at some ways to incorporate healthy habits in 2023 that will actually be successful.
When setting your goals it is always a good idea to know what the final destination is, however be sure to know what the small measurements of success look like. In other words, if you've never run a day in your life and decide you want to run a marathon this year, set small milestones. Celebrate the first walk / runs you do even if they are just for 15 mins. Set goals to run your first mile, then your first 5 miles and build from there.
New goals can be exciting at first so the motivation to stick with your resolutions is heightened, however over time the motivation begins to die as results don't come quickly and the effort is a lot! Therefore don't count on that feeling of motivation to get you to the gym today, to make a healthy meal instead of ordering in or to save your money. When the motivation isn't there, rely on discipline to keep moving forward. Well those words are easy to say but what does that mean? To get disciplined, you need to establish new habits, and let them become your new routine. So if you want to go to the gym, set your gym clothes out the night before, put your alarm on and when it is time to go and you don't want to.....well do it anyway! When you want to order in, out loud say NO! Change the course of your thinking.
Schedule time in your schedule to work on your resolutions and treat these blocked out times as a non negotiable meeting. You wouldn't push a doctors appointment out or a meeting with your boss, so get just as disciplined with your time for self development.
One of the major reasons that resolutions don't work is because we often go in with an all or nothing attitude. This is the worst thing to do because we literally give ourselves permission to give up with the tiniest hiccup. Know that you will stumble on the way, and know that it is ok. As long as you can jump right back into your journey you will still be moving in the right direction. So don't decide that you are going to save half your pay check and then when that becomes too difficult just give up on saving. Instead, adjust your goal to something more manageable. Don't set a goal to get to the gym 5 days a week if you've never gone to the gym before... instead find a friend to work out with and plan to go 2-3 times a week to get started. You get the drift.
So those are just some tips to help you in 2023. We look forward to being a part of your journey, so don't forget to schedule our workouts into your calendar so that we can work out together this year.
